What happens when you ask an AI to paint a mental health picture?

That's a weird question to begin with, but we asked it anyways.

Mental health is, as opposed to physical health, a uniquely human issue ( as far as we know).

Neither animals nor machines are capable of being depressed or having anxiety attacks. Even though animals are capable of feeling fear and experiencing trauma, the construct of depressive episodes, psychotic symptoms, or panic attacks have not been witnessed in animals.

So machines are even further from being capable of feeling emotions or anything really. So what would happen if we asked a machine to express mental health constructs as paintings?

Over at hypnogram.xyz, you can ask an AI to paint anything that comes to mind.

Some amazing pieces that have been created are:

lake with mountains with a rainbow over everything oil, realism

a alien world with plants and water oil, realism

So we went ahead and asked for our own paintings

The art projects were:

I was really surprised by the originality of the composition. the AI used the brain structure as the environment and shows part of human head in agony, kind of intertwined with the mind itself. It definitely depicts our struggle within ourselves.

What would mental health look like as a monument, is surely a question you have asked yourself a ton... . And if not, we did it for you :)

The statue kind of reminds me of the Egyptian sphinx as the structure surrounding the head resembles a lion's mane. But it could also be seen as the chaos that often originates in our minds as a consequence of our, mostly intrusive, thoughts. The statue exerts both a calm facade as well as defuse and slightly chaotic structure, which reminds me a lot of the ones living with depression, anxiety or trauma and have mastered the art of "fake it, till you make it".

In this piece, I particularly like the "absence" of the head or more so the inability to see it, because it is hidden inside a cloud. It both describes the person dealing with mental health issues who is often "clouded" and can't perceive the world clearly as well as the people watching from outside, who often have a hard time "seeing" into the mind of a person with mental health issues.

Even though the positioning of the body is nothing new I did like the composition of colors and strokes, which really convey the dark place, in which we can find ourselves during a depressive episode.

And finally my favorite:

anxiety, salvador dali,
anxiety, salvador dali,

I just love how the AI managed to recreate Dali's style and colors, while painting an amazing picture of an anxious mind. I can see the "demons" in our heads, controlling what we think and feel, while we are incapable of expressing it in a clear and understandable manner to the outside. The surrounding desert further intensifies the difficult condition we find ourselves in while dealing with anxiety and intrusive thought.

What do you think? Did the AI manage to paint the picture? Let us know in the comments.
